Safe to Spend: One Daily Number Instead of a Budget You Never Check
A monthly budget answers a question you asked on the first of the month. What you actually want to know, standing in a shop on the nineteenth, is smaller: can I spend this today?
Safe to spend answers that with one number.
How it's worked out
SpendSmart AI takes your overall monthly budget, subtracts what you've already spent this month, and subtracts the recurring bills that are still due but haven't been logged yet. It divides what's left by the days remaining, counting today, and rounds down.
Here's a made-up month to show it. Say your budget is 3,000, you've spent 1,200, and 600 of rent and subscriptions is still to come. That leaves 1,200 to spread across 10 days, so your safe-to-spend today is 120.
Under the number there's a short line saying how it got there, either the amount of bills it's holding back or how many days it's spread across.
What it deliberately ignores
- Your bank balance. The app never connects to your bank, so it can't see one. Safe to spend is about your budget, not your cash.
- Income. Money you expect to receive isn't counted. Only the budget you set is.
- Category budgets. It uses the overall monthly budget, the one that isn't tied to a category.
It also needs a budget to exist. Without one, the card just nudges you to set one.
When you're over
If bills and spending have already used up the month, it doesn't show a negative number. It says how far over you are and that the budget is already committed. That's less friendly than a green number, and more useful.
It works from day one
There's no waiting period. On the first day of the month it already has a number, because it doesn't predict anything. It only does arithmetic on what you've told it.
The forecast is separate. From about the fifth day of the month the Home screen also shows where you're heading, with a line like "On track for about X by month end". It adds your spending so far, the bills still due, and your usual daily spending for the days left. It gets more reliable around day ten.
Where you see it
- Home screen: the Safe to spend today card.
- iPhone widgets: a Safe to spend widget in small and medium sizes, and a lock screen version in circular and rectangular shapes.
- Android widgets: a Safe to spend today widget, which also shows the week and the next bill.
- Siri on iPhone: say "What is my safe to spend in SpendSmart AI". It answers out loud without opening the app and without a connection.
Widgets read what the app last saved on your phone, so they work offline. If the number hasn't updated in over a day, they say so instead of pretending. If the app lock is on, or you're signed out, they hide the amounts.
Why one number beats a chart
A budget you have to open and study is a budget you check less each week. A number on the lock screen gets read ten times a day without any effort. That's the whole idea.
It pairs well with tracking by voice, because a number is only right if the spending behind it was logged.
Frequently asked
Is safe to spend my bank balance? No. It's calculated from your own budget and what you've logged, not from any account.
Does it include recurring bills? Yes. Bills that are due but not yet logged are held back, so the number doesn't send you shopping with your rent.
Why is it zero or showing "over"? Because spending and upcoming bills have already used the month's budget.
Do I need Pro for it? It's calculated from your overall monthly budget, and the free plan includes three budgets.
